Methodology

How we turn self-reported numbers into annual revenue estimates.

We estimate annual revenue from each business's self-reported string (e.g. $138K/month MRR) using a deterministic parser. Same input → same output. No black-box model, no scraped numbers, no fabricated multiples.

1. Pattern recognition

The parser scans the founder-reported string for the first matching pattern and produces a single annualized figure. The patterns, in priority order:

  • MRR — matches /month, /mo, monthly, or MRR. The captured number is multiplied by 12.
  • ARR — matches /year, /yr, ARR, or annual. The captured number is used as-is.
  • 7-figure / 8-figure — a bare phrase like8-figure is normalized to $10M; 7-figure to $1M.
  • Ranges — strings like $15-20K/month use the midpoint of the range, then multiply by 12.
  • Mixed monthly + annual — when a string contains both, the parser trusts the parenthetical annual figure (e.g. $10K/month (~$120K ARR) resolves to $120K).
  • Raised / fundedraised, funding, seed round, Series A: resolves to $0. Capital raised is not revenue.
  • Tier fallback — when only a tier is available:
    • Pre-revenue → $0
    • <$10K → $5K
    • $10K-$100K → $50K
    • $100K-$1M → $500K
    • $1M+ → $1.5M

2. Methodology disclaimer

These figures are estimatesderived from public sources (founder posts, podcasts, news coverage) and the businesses' own marketing materials. They are not audited. We do not warrant current accuracy. See Terms of Service, §3 for the full accuracy disclaimer.

3. Verification sources

When we verify a revenue claim, we apply a source hierarchy:

  1. Top-tier press — WSJ, Bloomberg, Forbes, TechCrunch, The Information. A figure published here earns the Verified badge.
  2. Reputable tech publications — niche outlets with editorial standards (e.g. The Verge, Stratechery, indie blogs with named authors).
  3. Podcasts & interviews — founder statements on named podcasts (e.g. Indie Hackers, My First Million). Footnoted with the episode date.
  4. Founder self-reports— X/Twitter posts, LinkedIn updates, the founder's own website. Earns the Self-reported badge.

If the source is none of the above, or the figure is interpolated from a tier alone, the badge is Estimated.

4. Update cadence

We re-verify the directory monthly. Each business page shows aLast updated timestamp so readers can see how fresh the figure is. Founders can request a correction at any time by emailing corrections@agenticartists.com.
